The CARIAD South Asia office is responsible for a wide range of activities including:
- Running SHORT COURSES
- Coordinating the South Asia Hub of the DFID's (RiUP):Research Into Use Programme (RiUP)
- Coordinating CARIAD’s project activities with national and regional partners, e.g. National Agricultural Research Systems (NARSs), Agricultural Extension agencies, agricultural universities, non-government organisations and other stakeholders concerned with agricultural research development.
- Developing partnerships, linkages and networks of partners for implementing CARIAD’s project activities and to scale up the policies, products and technologies from previously DFID Plant Sciences Research Programme-funded projects in the region. Other roles include participating in the policy discussions and influencing policy changes related to crop breeding, variety testing, and seed production and marketing and disseminations strategies.
- Developing partnership with the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (IAAS), Tribhuvan University, for linking with UK and other European universities for learning and sharing through thesis supervision and other joint studies.
- Coordinating, linking and providing technical backstopping to the on-going activities of the previously DFID Plant Sciences Research Programme-funded projects, e.g. client-oriented breeding on rice and mungbean in Nepal and Bangladesh, rabi cropping project activities in Nepal, community-based seed production and distribution issues in Nepal and Bangladesh.
- Facilitate the institutionalisation and scaling up of the best outputs of DFID Plant Sciences Research Programme-funded project in Nepal and Bangladesh, e.g. variety release on rice, mungbean, and chickpea in Nepal and engage in constant dialogue with seed regulatory body of Bangladesh for recognising the data generated by participatory trials for releasing crop varieties. Develop and strengthen collaboration with Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) for institutionalising the COB approach and rice varieties bred using COB.
- Coordinate and facilitate the implementation of project activities in Nepal of the project on food security through ricebean research in India and Nepal (FOSRIN) and also provide necessary backstopping to FOSRIN activities in India. Arranging meetings, monitoring visits, sharing of information and germplasm and reporting for FOSRIN project.
